Interior of top-shaped asteroids with cohesionless surface

چکیده
Multiple sources of evidence suggest that asteroids ranging from hundreds meters to few kilometers in size are rubble piles, i.e. gravitational aggregates loosely consolidated material. However, no direct data on their internal structure is available date. Cohesion between rubble-pile building blocks has been invoked the past explain stability top-shaped asteroids, which most cases would not be capable maintaining large-scale shape features (low flattening, and a pronounced equatorial ridge) otherwise. physical origin cohesion unclear there it. Recent close-range imaging local sampling surfaces Near Earth Asteroids (NEA) presence very porous surface with minimal strength nearly cohesion. This raises new questions about such objects, important implications evolution. Here we show by numerically simulating dynamics irregular rocky fragments, rigid core within asteroid’s can top observed recently Bennu Ryugu, without need blocks. Also, find model produces more easily mass shedding, thought responsible for satellite formation. The never revealed so far, but consistent accretion history those recent estimates distribution. Our findings will tested directly ESA’s Hera mission, scan interior Dimorphos, small moon Didymos binary system, providing first time NEA.

Shattered Dirt: Surface Fracture of Granular Asteroids
Introduction: The hypothesis explored here is that asteroid 433 Eros, a relatively large (~33 km x 13 km x 13 km) rocky near-Earth asteroid, is structurally similar to the upper meters of the Moon – that it is globally a dry rocky dust-rich regolith, beaten apart by eons of cosmic impacts, but under 1/300 th the gravity. According to this view, the fractures expressed on the surface of Eros – a...
متن کاملChannelized free-surface flow of cohesionless granular avalanches in a chute with shallow lateral curvature
A series of laboratory experiments and numerical simulations have been performed to investigate the rapid fluid-like flow of a finite mass of granular material down a chute with partial lateral confinement. The chute consists of a section inclined at 40◦ to the horizontal, which is connected to a plane run-out zone by a smooth transition. The flow is confined on the inclined section by a shallo...
متن کاملHigh Resolution Surface Brightness Profiles of Near-Earth Asteroids
We present a new method to search for and est imate mass loss in near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) using high resolution surface photometry. The method was applied to 11 NEAs observed with a charge-coupled device (CCD) at the University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescope. The method yields limiting mass loss rates M -< 0.1 kg sec-1, 1-2 orders of magnitude smaller than the typical rates of weakly active comet...
متن کاملDark Asteroids: Insights into Surface Composition from Coal Spectra
Introduction: Dark asteroids, including Centaurs and Kuiper Belt objects display a range of spectral slopes with few, if any, discernible absorption bands [1, 2]. The reflectance spectra of a series of coal samples have been measured in order to provide insights into the possible mechanisms responsible for the variety of slopes, and lack of organic absorption bands, seen in the spectra of these...
متن کاملDevelopment of Stresses in Cohesionless
The pressure distribution beneath a conical sandpile, created by pouring sand from a point source onto a rough rigid support, shows a pronounced minimum below the apex (‘the dip’). Recent work of the authors has attempted to explain this phenomenon by invoking local rules for stress propagation that depend on the local geometry, and hence on the construction history, of the medium. We discuss t...
